Common audio issues and how to resolve them

Can’t hear the other person? They can’t hear you? No audio at all?

This is a very common issue and in most cases it’s caused by your computer or browser using the wrong microphone or speaker.

This guide shows the exact settings to check so you can fix it quickly.

Most common causes

  • Wrong microphone selected

  • Wrong speakers selected

  • Volume settings is turned all the way down

  • Browser mic permission blocked or using different microphone

  • External mic connected but not set as default

These steps resolve the issue in the vast majority of cases.

1. Check your browser settings (Chrome/Edge/Safari)

Your browser needs permission to use your microphone and camera. Even if your computer settings are correct, your browser can block or override your mic.

  1. Click the icon to the left of the URL in your browser’s address bar

  2. Make sure Microphone and Camera are set to Allow

  3. Click the arrow next to Microphone to see which mic is selected

  4. Switch to the correct microphone if needed

Heads up: this might refresh the page and briefly drop you from the call, simply rejoin to continue.

2. Check the sound settings of your computer

Your computer often has more than one microphone and speaker to choose from, and it doesn't always default to the one you're actually using. You might assume the right device is selected when it's not (this can happen after a system update, or when Bluetooth reconnects on its own).

Windows

  1. Open Settings → click System → click Sound

  2. Look for Input and Output

Input = what you speak into (your microphone)
Output = what you hear sound from (your speakers or headphones)

Usually, these should match (ie: If you’re using a headset, both should be set to that headset).

  3. Make sure:

    • Input is set to the microphone you are actually using

    • Output is set to the speakers/headphones you are actually using

    • If you don’t have any external microphones connected, the built-in internal microphone will be the only option.

    • If you use a Bluetooth or external headset, you may see more than one option in the list. Just because it's connected doesn't mean your computer is using it by default. Double-check that it's selected as both your Input and Output.

  4. Check your volume level. On the Sound page, you'll see a Volume slider under your output device. Make sure it isn't set too low or muted.

Mac

  1. Click the Apple menu (top‑left)

  2. Select System Preferences

  3. Click "Sound"

  4. Look for the Input and Output tabs

Input = what you speak into (your microphone)
Output = what you hear sound from (your speakers or headphones)

Usually, these should match (ie: If you’re using a headset, both should be set to that headset).

  5. Make sure:

    • Input is set to the microphone you are actually using

    • Output is set to the speakers/headphones you are actually using

    • If you don’t have any external microphones connected, the built-in internal microphone will be the only option.

  6. Test the input volume of the microphone you've selected and adjust if needed using the volume slider while speaking.

  7. Once set, close Settings.

Step 3: Quick test

Run a quick Network and Audio test to confirm everything is working.
